¡Hola amigx!
I grew up in Mexico City and when I moved to Chicago, one of the first things I did was go to the grocery store to scout for Mexican food/products. I remember going into the "ethnic aisle" and feeling unrepresented. I didn't find brands/products that portrayed Mexico as I knew it. I saw well-established Mexican brands that were unlikely to upgrade their ingredient list, innovate in the marketplace and portray Mexico in a non-stereotypical way. I created Nemi Snacks to share un poquito de México with you and elevate the liveliness, colors and pride of my cultura (no sombreros here).
Nemi means “to live” in Náhuatl, the language of the Aztecs. We make deeply deliciosos snacks with fiber-rich nopales, ancestral seeds and mercado fresh chiles and spices.
We have the opportunity to create more than a snack and we think a good business should be good to the community. We partner with small independent Mexican farmers using sustainable farming techniques. We work with womxn of color who hold positions usually reserved for men and partner with a local nonprofit committed to food justice.
